Never thought of a "washer" in this light before...what a blessing to have the ones we do! A "Warshing Clothes Recipe" - imagine having a recipe for this!

Years ago an Alabama grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe (this is an exact copy, as written and found in an old scrapbook - spelling errors and all.)

WARSHING CLOTHES
BUILD FIRE IN BACKYARD TO HEAT KETTLE OF RAIN WATER. SET TUBS SO SMOKE WONT BLOW IN EYES IF WIND IS PERT. SHAVE ONE HOLE CAKE OF LIE SOAP IN BOILIN WATER.
SORT THINGS, MAKE 3 PILES
1 PILE WHITE,
1 PILE COLORED,
1 PILE WORK BRITCHES AND RAGS.
TO MAKE STARCH, STIR FLOUR IN COOL WATER TO SMOOTH, THEN THIN DOWN WITH BOILING WATER. TAKE WHITE THINGS, RUB DIRTY SPOTS ON BOARD, SCRUB HARD, AND BOIL, THEN RUB COLORED DON'T BOIL JUST WRENCH AND STARCH.
TAKE THINGS OUT OF KETTLE WITH BROOM STICK HANDLE, THEN WRENCH, AND STARCH.
HANG OLD RAGS ON FENCE.

Ok, so those of you who have known me a while know that I am no stranger to bizarre happenings. I don't know why, but my life just seems to be truly filled with them, but none that compare with this morning.

I have been having some issues with my toilet. The lever or floater or whatever its called does not seem to drop when I flush so the tank doesn't fill with water. Of late this seems to be happening a lot. I have been meaning to investigate the problem, but just haven't gotten to it.

Well it happened again this morning, but this time once I got the water running it wouldn't stop. So I lift up the lid and see what the problem is. My little toilet bowl disc had floated over and stopped the stopper thingy (that would be a technical term) from allowing the tank to fill with water. I moved it and reached over to the sink to wash some black stuff off my hand before I put the lid back down, when the lid slipped and fell into the tank, breaking it and causing a flood all over my bathroom floor. Then I couldn't get the water to stop....I couldn't get the water valve to turn off. I finally find a lotion bottle close by that is the right size to put under the floater to at least temporarily stop the water flow.

Not a great start to the morning for sure. I called the landlord who informed me that this would be my responsibility as it was not caused by "normal wear and tear". Well this point is debatable, but it is what it is I guess. A plumber was called. He called me to let me know when I could expect him. He also informed me that it might be necessary to replace the toilet if he didn't have a tank that would fit my current toilet....I was freaking! HELLO I can't afford a freaking new toilet!!! The plumber was very nice and let me know that he would do his best to make this as inexpensive as possible.

Well when the plumber shows up, he takes a look at my tank and says, "wow I've never seen a tank break like that." Of course you haven't! Typical of my life. But on initial inspection, it looks as though the tank in his truck will fit. (hurray, a hint of some good news) He has to take the tank out in 2 pieces. As he is working to get the second piece out I hear, "Oh no!" Not what you want to hear from your plumber as he is working on your toilet. He comes out and asks if I have any gauze or anything as he has cut himself on the broken piece. Looks like he will need stitches....it is a pretty bad and deep cut. He asks if I'm queasy, I say no to which he replies, good cuz I am. Visions of my plumber passing out on my bathroom floor fly through my head. CRAZY!

We get him temporarily bandaged up, he says he thinks he can finish the job before he goes to get stitches. I say, if you need to go, I can wait. He decides to finish the job. The tank fits! Hallelujah!!!! I'm soooo relieved!! He is able to finish the job, it works great! And my water filling issues are also fixed as he replaces all the hardware inside the tank as well....HURRAY.

Then he comes to me and says he wants to try something, but needs my help. Would I be willing to help him superglue his injury? Really? Are you kidding me??? I figure it is his arm, so I will give it my best shot. So he goes and gets superglue from his truck and we proceed to superglue his cut arm in my bathroom.

So today, I broke my toilet, called a plumber, injured a plumber had injured plumber fix my toilet and performed superglue surgery in my bathroom....all this before noon! Can you believe it??

And the obsession continues!!!

As many of you know, this year I have joined with several members of my family in riding the Tour de Cure for Diabetes! Our team name is the Blood Sugar Daddies. Catchy right? :) We are choosing to go on the 25 mile ride! This is quite the goal for me as I have never done anything like this before, but am very excited to do it this year! All of you support both financial and emotional is greatly appreciated. I am dedicating this ride this year, personally to my friend Dawn as she is the one who coaxed, encouraged, harrassed....however you classify it (all of the above, actually)...to do this for myself as well as all of those in my family and around the world who suffer from this disease. Dawn and I had planned to train and ride together and while she will not be there with my physcially, she will be there with me in spirit!!

I also have a goal to raise $500 to go toward research to find a cure! I am currently 34% there! So I have a ways to go!!! I Miss You My Sweet Friend

This week has been a very difficult one. My sweet friend Dawn Shelton was found dead in her apartment on April 1st. This was devastating news for me. Dawn and I have been really close buddies...we went to church together, we encouraged one another through difficult times, we just really fit well with one another. She was truly a kindred spirit to me and I miss her dearly. We only knew one another for just over a year, but it felt like we had known one another forever. I do know that she is safe and happy where she is now, but I cannot help but wish she didn't have to go so soon. I just feel like I still need her, but I guess others must need her more.

Sadly I only have one picture of her. It was taken on the opening night of the Twilight movie. A bunch of us all went out for dinner and a movie that evening and I wanted to mark the evening with some pictures. I will be forever grateful I did.

Here are the group pictures. One of many fun and happy memories I will treasure with my sweet friend Dawn! I truly love you and miss you with my whole heart and soul!

As many of you know, Emily, my friend, and I threw a Twilight DVD release party! It was soooo much fun! We had all kinds of silly fun! Had a pot luck dinner full of Twilight cuisine as seen below:

The menu consisted of:
Marble White Ice Cream
Vegetarian Pizza
Cooked Flesh (fried chicken)
Harry Clearwater's fish fry (w/catfish)
Venison Fajita's with red "Bella" Red Peppers
Vampire Blood Punch
And lovely fondue - 1 Strawberry, 1 Chocolate!

We did a fabulous job of decorating Emily's living room...true twilight style! :)

Due to Emily's genius, we created a photo booth to take photos...some of our own apple pics as seen below.

These are just a sampling, but I thought that the hostesses of the party should be featured here. :)

Then we did some lovely pictures with Edward. :)

Not my best side, but oh well! Again this is just a sampling, but Natalie was the lovely friend that introduced me to the love world of Twilight...so I think it fitting that she get a feature in this blog as well! Thanks Natalie!!!

There were, of course, a few out of control moments! I just love my fellow Twilighters!!!

So I have been reminded over the past few days the power of music in my life. I have had a bad couple of weeks. I had surgery on my wrist and while it went pretty well, it has been pretty painful especially since it was my right wrist and I am severly right handed so I have been pretty dang disabled. Well I have become pretty impatient and depressed throughout this healing process. and to take a phrase from my nephew Jacob, "I am done with this injury! SO DONE!!

Now keep in mind that this statement could be applied to a mutitude of other issues over the last little while as well, but we won't get into all of that. Today as I have been working and listening to my itunes one of my favorite Michael Buble' songs came on and suddenly my mood improved. Now this doesn't always work, but for whatever reason it worked today! So I thought I would share today's happy song with you all. Here is a nice live performace of "Everything" by Michael Buble! I was catching up on my blog reading today and was reading my sister, Betsy's blog. She apparently was having a bad day, I'm sure we all can relate, and said she found the below video on a friend's blog. It spoke to me in a way I don't think I can fully express. I am so truly blessed with strong women in my life...sisters, my mom, friends...all women of varying ages, and life circumstances that have stood by me through thick and thin. You have been my circle of strength. I cannot thank you enough for that! You have all been my lifesavers on countless occasions and I love you dearly for that!

So 2009 has mixed reviews for me so far. My car was totaled at the end of 2008 and I am awaiting insurance paperwork before I can look into buying a new one. So the first part of the year I am bussing it....oh reminds me of the good ole days!!

However on the brighter side of things, all of my favorite football teams have won thier bowl games! WVU! LSU! and most prominently U of U!!! The Sugar Bowl was oh so sweet this year!!!!!!!!!! I was so excited and am still riding on that beautiful high! One of my co-workers sent me the following "motivational posters" and I thought I would share them with you! I have had a pretty crappy December so far and it didn't really look like it was going to look any brighter anytime soon. I mentioned in an earlier post about my ill fated car accident earlier this month. Well, my car was declared a total loss this week. This was really bad news as getting another car will prove to be a bit difficult and my take some time. I won't bore you with the details, but it has made me quite depressed to say the least. Merry Christmas to me!

However, today I found out that I have been named MTV News' "Woman of the Year"! Well me and the legions of other Twilight fans out there! This is our grand introduction to this great honor:

Holiday Eating Tips

My sister in law sent me the below email. I thought it was very humorous so I'm sharing it with you all! :)

HOLIDAY EATING TIPS
1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door where they're serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It's rare.. You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made> > with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple,Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of> > each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? LaborDay?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner. Remember this motto to live by:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

confused and contused!

So I have had quite an eventful couple of weeks! Some of you already know about it, but here is the run down for the rest of you! :) Last Tuesday morning I woke up on the floor by my bed. I was in the throws of a pretty bad insulin reaction and must have tried to get up earlier and ended up on the floor. I was able to stumble to the kitchen and chug some OJ! Gotta love the OJ. It ended up ok, but it was scary for a few moments. And of course, I have no idea why I dropped so low...diabetes is such a fun disease! Anyway, luckily everything worked out ok.

Then on Saturday, we had our annual work Christmas party. This year we had it up Little Cottonwood Canyon at Snowbird. It was a lovely party, and a beautiful setting. Unfortunately, it didn't end all that well for me. While traveling home from the party, I believe I hit a patch of black ice. My car spun out of control, crossed the other lane and off the road nearly rolling over and down into the river were it not for some strategically placed trees (and perhaps some very diligent guardian angels as well). I was and am a very lucky lady. I didn't really feel the need for an ambulance at the scene, which I got a lot of crap from from several directions, not the least of which was coming from my mom. :)

I did go to the ER on Sunday and got all x-rayed and so forth. I was officially diagnosed with "a contusion of the right hand" and a sprained back. They gave me a prescription of ibuprofen for the day and loritab for the night. I would like to officially go on record to say that loritab works GREAT! And ibuprofen is a poor substitution. :) All in all I am healing and am very grateful for people around me who have taken such good care of me and for my loving family, as well as for guardian angels and most of all strategically placed trees! :)

I have not heard what the insurance company's verdict on the car is...I am hoping it can be fixed...I do really love my car. I will keep you posted. :) Everyone say a little prayer for Flower, my Honda Civic!! :)

So I have recently discovered that i am a bit of a Chriatmas decoration nut! I just LOVE Christmas decorations!!! I have about 10 to 11 boxes of just Christmas decorations. For a single girl, that's quite a bit! I live in a basement apartment this year so my outside decorating is going to have to be pretty creative. So I am a little late in posting some of these pictures, so I am just combining all Halloween party pics to one slide show and post. The first group of pictures are from my ward party on the Friday before Halloween. Trey and Maya came down for it, so that I could watch them while thier parents enjoyed Madame Butterfly. It was a lot of fun and my debut activity on the activities committee. I was in charge of the decorations. Not bad, I say! :)

The remaining pics were on Halloween day. The first several are at my work trick or treating party. So glad to see so many nieces and nephews there! It was so much fun!! :) Then of course there is the family get together at Charlie and Trisha's house. They were wonderful hosts and served some faboulous grub! Fun times had by all!!!

Wow! It's already October 2nd! Do you know what that means??? As you can see on my little countdown, that means that there are only 49 days til the Twilight movie release! FANTASTIC!!!! I am soooo extremely excited! As many of you who follow the Twilight movie news may know, Paramore is doing 2 new songs for the Twilight movie soundtrack which I read today will be released on Nov. 4th. Yesterday I got that dreaded call...you know the one, from one of the counselors in the bishopric. The one where you know there is a calling in your future. Now I don't mind having a job in the ward, but the not knowing what they are going to ask you to do...especially when you are relatively new the the ward and no one really knows you that well. So needless to say I was nervous. But there was no real need for nervousness. I was called to be on the activities committee. It really serves me right, given that I have been pretty critical of the lack of any activities in the ward at all. But I am gearing up to bring some much needed fun into this old timer's ward. :) Wish me luck! :)

Utah vs UNLV - What a game

This past Saturday was the annual UofU Faculty & Staff football game. It has become a bit of a tradition with the Dixon clan and I. This year we were pleased to have Charlie and Chad join us as well! We had a blast!!!! It was sooooo much fun! Below are a few pics detailing the madness!

At last! My Twilight vacation Pics and stories!!!! :)

Above is the very LARGE slide show from my vacation. I has so much fun and wanted to share so much of it. This ideas started when I saw on one of the blogs I visit often that the Forks, WA Chamber of Commerce has started running "Twilight Tours". Throughout the town they had found houses and landmarks that they thought matched those of the characters in the Twilight Series Books. I thought, what a fun birthday trip that would be, and since it was my 40th birthday I decided to make it a road trip. I converted my friend Siri on the idea as she is turning 40 this year as well. She is not an obsessed Twilight fan like me, but thought the trip would be fun anyway. So I started by driving to Chico, CA, to pick up my friend Siri. We stayed in Chico for a day and then we headed up to Crescent City, CA. Along the way we encountered many interesting bathroom stops, as well as encountering some very interesting people. Our projected 5 hour drive, took us 10, we still don't know exactly how this happened, but whatever, we got there. Above you can see some of the coastal pics we took that day as well as the beautiful sunset in Crescent City.

The next day we drove through some of the Redwood Forest areas. They were just breathtaking. I LOVED the lush greeness everywhere! Then we moved on to Port Orford, OR. We stopped at a gas station there and Siri asked the attendant how many people lived there. His response was "not many". So Port Orford, population "not many" was quite an interesting town. We stayed at one of two hotels there. The one we chose was the friendliest and the man there was quite the talker. He had a million stories and seemed to have had experiences doing almost everything. The room was quite charming. :) Below is the video of our room...keep a look out for the complimentary fly swatter in the room. :)

The next day we went to see the Cape Blanco lighthouse. This was a true highlight of my trip! I LOVED this lighthouse. Everything about it just looked like what I imagined a lighthouse to look like. It was so fun. The volunteers that took us through the tour were so fun. I learned that they were from over the country, just spending thier summers leading lighthouse tours. I sooo want this job when I retire! I would LOVE it!

After the lighthouse, we had to make a mad dash to Forks,WA to make our tour. We did stop a few times and took some Oregon coastal pics...just LOVED the scenery! Unfortunately, arrival in Forks did not go as smoothly as I would have liked. We were very late in getting into town, and had a flat tire and a Sheriff's deputy actually helped us change the tire with my little spare donut... ended up sleeping in the car at a campsite just outside of town, which I was very unhappy about, but Siri thought was a great adventure! Then the next day I try to buy a new tire, but alas they sold thier last one the day before...figures! So I was told that spare would take me into Port Angeles and I could get a new tire there...so on to the Twilight Tour. It was very fun actually, and they did a great job. I totally recommend it!! The town is just too cute for words. I stopped at Sully's drive in and had my Bella Burger, which was delicious! I would love to go again, but next time I think I need to bring one of my Twilight crazed fans! That would have made it so much more fun, but I loved it anyway.

The next stop was in Port Angeles. Loved this town! It is very touristy, but it has such a nice feel about it. We were there during a arts festival and got to see a cool sand sculpture contest while there. We were unable to make it to Victoria, CA, as we did not have our passports with us, maybe next time. :) From Port Angeles we traveled to Vashon Island. We discovered a fun cabin on Siri's phone's navagator...which by the way was a godsend on this trip! So we took a ferry out to Vashon Island...actually there is a lighthouse out there that brought us there first, and then we discovered the cabin. It was sooo fun. I highly recommend this place. It is incredibly romantic...that part was completely wasted on Siri and I, but one of the owners was totally not aware of that and called us "partners". We got a good chuckle out of that one.

The next day we went to see the Point Robinson Lighthouse. We could not tour it, as it was not open, but the area around it was just beautiful! Then we ferried out to Seattle. I have to say I LOVE Seattle too! It is a beautiful city. We went all over and got many souvenirs.

After Seattle we went to Portland...we lost some touring time as Siri had a migrane and was really feeling poorly, but that evening we found a fun Cajun restaurant that made up in atmosphere what it lacked in authentic food. I did like Portland a lot too. The next day we visited the Portland Temple and then went on a historic Columbia River Gorge tour I found online. It was just gorgeous! Truly breathtaking!

After the Columbia River trip, I got very ill. We lost another day cuz I couldn't leave the hotel room. it sucked!

Our last major stop on this trip was to Florence OR. I really wanted to see the sealion caves and our last lighthouse visit. This one was a little more difficult than the last as it was a 1/2 mile hike from the beach and it was raining of course. Probably not the best way to get well from being sick...hike in the rain, but it was well worth the effort!

Anyway, that is the quick rundown of the great trip. It was so much fun! I truly would love to live anyway along these areas...just in case you were wondering, Ben...the Oregon or Washington coasts are fabulous areas! :)

Girls sleepover weekend

Above are the pics from my lovely sleepover with those that could come. We missed Morgan and Maya very much and also hope that Maddie will be able to join us at a future date as well! As you can tell we had a great deal of fun! Went to "Evan Almighty" that was showing in the park and then went swimming at the pool at Cindy's condo complex. It was great fun. And in true Cindy fashion we also created a syncronized swimming routine that we videoed. This is the first run of the video and we were unable to do it again as others were coming into the pool and we could no longer monopolize it. Check it out below tho...pretty funny! :)

So I was forced to go to the dentist today. I typically have to be forced as I really hate going. It seems like with many of my doctor appointments, I often receive bad news. Well I was expecting bad news from the dentist as I was experiencing some pain above one of my crowns. I was fearful of some extensive work. Well as it turns out, it was not anything really serious...just some gum inflamation that I do have to treat by rinsing with peroxide (bleh!) several times a day and allowing it to heal, but no drilling or shots or anything excessively painful! Yeah! And NO CAVITIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woo Hoo!! I am just so happy I had to share, for once GOOD NEWS!!!!

My brush with greatness!

I know, I know...I am a terrible blogger. I think part of my problem is that I am on the computer all day long and so going back on it to blog in off hours is just sometimes too much for me. The other problem is my life is rather boring...so I have not a lot to say. :) However, that changed a little bit this week and I just have to share my brush with greatness.

I had the opportunity this weekend to meet one of my favorite people. She is the creator of my latest obsession....the Twilight series. Yes I mean Stephenie Meyer! My sister, Jenny got tickets to a book signing event she was having at Thanksgiving Point on Friday. It was a very long day/night, but truly a fun experience. It did my heart good to see that no matter how obsessed I think I am with this author and her books, I am no where near as insane as most of the people at this event. I didn't actually see all of them, but when I looked at some video of the evening on YouTube, I was shocked to see some of the extremes!! Here is a link to the video that shows us all waiting outside the venue to go inside. You can kinda see Teresa, Jenny and I about 9 seconds into the video in front of a jeep right by one of the pine trees. I am sitting in a peach colored shirt...it is very blurry and you can't see us very well, but that will give you an idea of where we were and the craziness that was all around us. :)

A side note on this one...I got a little flack from Stephenie, as I had her personalize my book to Buffy. As I am sure you can imagine, in a room full of vampire fans, there were some doubtful looks relating to a certain vampire slayer. All I have to say is that I was Buffy long before there were any vampire slayers...and I am a much funner Buffy. :)

All in all it was a very long, but fun day. We got to Thanksgiving point around 3:30 or 4:00 in the afternoon, got into the building around 5:15 or so....Stephenie came out at about 7pm and we got our books signed at about 10pm. Crazy, but I really had a fun time...and got a lot of reading done. LOVING "The Host"! Not yet finished, but totally loving it.

On top of all of that, I am sooooo excited for the Twilight Movie! I cannot wait!! December seems so far away. But I enjoy visiting the many websites that discuss this upcoming event in the meantime. Where I was 10 years ago: I think I am too old to remember 10 years ago. I think I had recently moved to Salt Lake and probably in my 4th or 5th home of the six I ended up having during the course of that year...it was not a good year. I was about 9 months into working at the University of Utah...and I am still here. WOW!

Things on my to do list: 1) go to Baskin Robbins for my 31 cent a scoop ice cream treat (even though it is 40 degrees and threatening snow...hello its ice cream, people!) 2) Paperless office project ( I think it will be the death of me) 3) hang pictures and stuff at my apt. 4) pay bills :( 5) finish afghan for my dear friend before she has her new baby (my days are numbered on this one for sure) 6) vacuum my apt. 7) put together my dresser I purchased like a month ago or something. 8) finish listening to New Moon and Eclipse to complete the Twilight series thus far (let's be honest..that is probably my no. 1...I am obsessed afterall)

Things I would do if I was a billionaire: Pay off all depts, buy a fabulous house and a convertible red mercedes and a few other cars for any ole occasion. Travel with friends and family where ever our hearts desire! Assist family members in getting out of debt and with anything they would be in need of or want. Truly be the favorite aunt, sister, sister in law, daughter...oh wait, I already am, never mind. :)

So I went to my plastic surgeon appointment today. It was relatively painless...I thought he might say he didn't need to do anything as the cyst appears to be going away. But alas this is not the case. He said that once they abscess they tend to do it over and over again. That is all he had to say...this is not an experience I choose to ever repeat...I was ready to get rid of this thing today! But I have to wait until Thursday. :( Then he said that the scar left by my doctor was at an odd angle and that he would try to leave the new scar along the line of my crow's feet. Excuse me??? Crow's feet??? What crow's feet? I see no crow's feet here!!!

Valentine Surprise!

I just wanted to shout from the rooftops what a great supportive loving family that I have!!!!! Valentine's Day can be pretty depressing for a single girl, and I think can be even more so when you are divorced and you thought you had your Valentine, but find out that you don't. I was in pretty good spirits this year, however. Things were looking up. My infected cyst is healing really nicely and is not nearly as painful as it has been. I recieved some really sweet ecards from my mom and some nice Valentine's Day wishes from other members of my family and was invited to come to a movie with my mom, and 2 of my sisters. It was just a really nice day. But there was one thing that just made my year so far!

My sister-in-law, Laura, emailed me to ask what my plans were, because she said they had a little Valentine's Day gift they wanted to give me and they didn't know when they would be down my direction. I told them about my movie plans and that I would be in their neck of the woods for that. So we made plans to meet at my mom's house. Well, I thought it was very sweet that she would get me a gift and in all honesty I just thought it would be a little treat or something that they would have just picked up at the store for the kids to give to me. Boy! was I surprised! When I got there, Peyton, my nephew gave me the sweetest little "brag book"! It holds pictures of Dan & Laura's kids and me with them. It is one of the most precious things I think I have ever received....certainly the best Valentine I have ever received! I can't thank them enough! It made me feel so loved and special! I hope they have some idea how much I treasure it and am so grateful to have them in my life! Below are pictures of the book cuz I just needed to "brag"! :)

Reclaiming Buffy

I went to my new ward this Sunday. I only went to Sacrament Meeting, so I didn't get a chance to introduce myself to anyone until after the meeting. As I was sitting in the meeting it suddenly occurred to me that this was a completely new situation for me. No one in this room knew me at all. I could be anyone I wanted to be. In the past I used to have everyone call me Buffy except at work as it was easier with legal paperwork and such to have people call me by my legal name "Carla". When I moved to Salt Lake about 10 years ago or so, I moved in with someone I had met at work and so I was introduced at church and everywhere as Carla. For the first time in 10 years, I have moved somewhere where no one knows me at all. So on Sunday, I decided that it was time for me to reclaim Buffy! So that is how I introduced myself. It was oddly liberating.

Now I do find it interesting that today, the day after I reclaim my identity, I have to go to the doctor because I have a massive infected cyst on the side of my face. And have gone to work with a hole in my face covered by a 4x4 gauze bandage and tape...boy am I a sight! One might wonder if these two events are connected somehow. It would appear that the boil on the butt of humanity has now moved to my face! Such is my life I suppose. This time however they want to send me to a plastic surgeon to remove the cyst after the infection is gone....I wonder if I can get any other work done while I am at it...any suggestions? :)

SAD Therapy

So it's Friday!!! Hallelujah...the end to an extremely long work week!

I woke up this morning extremely down for several reasons I think. One I HATE winter! I am not very fond of snow and short days are a serious bummer as well as cold temperatures! I crave warmth!! I really didn’t want to go to work or even get out of bed.

Secondly, 5 years ago today I was engaged to my now ex-husband. While I am so incredibly happy that I am no longer married to that man, I feel a sense of loss sometimes…especially when a friend of mine, recently married, shows me her wedding video. What can I say…I’m just a boob.

Anyway, as the day progressed I discovered some things. Just like my sister, Betsy, I am in serious need of a SAD light to rid me of these winter blues! However, there are some other therapies that seem to have worked pretty well today! Music! I was able to listen to a variety of happy music today, for example…”Wake me up before you go go”…it’s an oldie but a goodie! I dare you to listen to it and not smile and wanna get up and dance!

Then of course there are the songs that remind me of the strengths I receive through the hard times I have experienced in my life like “Broken” by Lindsey Haun…if you have not heard it I recommend you look it up, it is a good one.

And finally there are the songs that remind me of the qualities that are uniquely me…like “Freckles” by Natasha Bedingfield…yes Jenny I downloaded it and you are right it is FABULOUS!!!! And truly makes me happy just listening to it, “Cuz a face without freckles is like the sky without stars.”

So those are my SAD therapy suggestions! I know that this therapy is tailored to me and my personality, but we all have those songs that work for us…so go out and find your SAD songs! Hopefully we can bring in the warm sunshine of Spring shortly! Until then we have our SAD songs, cuz “sad songs say so much.”

Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!!!

So begins the life and times of Buffonskivitch! :) Happy Mardi Gras everyone! So I am now becoming a blogger. WOW! This could be a very interesting new phase. :) So for my first post I will share with you my most interesting baking experience of last night. Every year on Mardi Gras I have established the tradition of making a King Cake for my coworkers. As I am the only Louisiana representative in my University of Utah office, I felt it my duty to educate my office on the traditions of my home state. It is fun to do, but a lot of work goes into it and let's just say there are some years when I am kicking myself for starting this in the first place!

Well last night was one of those times. I have just recently moved into a new apartment and am still surrounded by boxes. Not to mention my sister, Kathy, was in town from Arizona and we had plans to spend some time together and go out to dinner before she flew home later that evening. Well, King Cake takes some time to make as it is a yeast cake and needs time to raise. So the plan was to mix the dough and let it raise the first time while we went out to dinner and then go home and finish making the cake. Well this went smoothly enough...Kathy and her friend Melanie came over and had the tour of my new place and while I put the cake dough together Kathy and Mel were nice enough to shelf paper one of my kitchen cabinets that I had not gotten to yet. Actually it was a HUGE help as it decluttered my kitchen quite a bit! ...Thanks Kathy and Mel! :) Then we went out for sushi! (yummy!)

When I got home, the dough had risen ok...not as well as I would have liked, but well enough. My kitchen is a little drafty and it is very, very cold here right now, and I think that it affected the rising process. Anyway, I finished the prep work...filled the dough and rolled it up to rise again. Again, it didn't raise all that well, but well enough. Then I baked it. Well, during this process is when the explosion occurred...the filling was oozing out of the top...it was like it was turning itself inside out! When I took it out of the oven this is what it looked like!

Well, I was a little worried that glaze and colored sugar would not disguise the mess I was seeing before me or assist in keeping the cake together enough for people to eat it as it appeared to be simply falling apart. Well, luckily it calmed down a bit as it cooled and held together. And here is my finished product.

Not too bad, eh?
